Manoa Japanese Language School welcomes elementary-aged children from Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. Students learn Japanese through engaging, interactive lessons that emphasize speaking, reading, and writing—rather than relying solely on traditional methods. Throughout the school year, students also experience Japanese culture through a variety of events designed to enrich their learning. The curriculum includes Japanese songs and crafts for all levels. In addition, there is a traditional Japanese tea ceremony club called Seiyu-kai (清友会), led by a tea master from Urasenke, one of Japan’s most prestigious tea schools. Students also have the opportunity to perform for family and friends, and join events such as Undo-kai, Setsubun and Graduation Ceremony for 5th graders. Classes are held every weekday (Monday through Friday) in the afternoon and follow the public school calendar. The MJLS is closed during public school fall, winter, spring, and summer breaks, as well as on all federal and state holidays. Each class is 45 minutes long and takes place between 3:10 p.m. and 4:40 p.m. Classes are divided into First Bell and Second Bell groups according to grade level and proficiency. The final schedule is set each year by the School director based on enrollment.
